The ethereal charm and elegance of antique jewelry to this day behold generations, so much so that one can make out clear-cut influences of the historical jewelry patterns on the modern jewelry designs. The magic of the jewelry simply refuses to fade away, as it is reminiscent of the bygone era and so, the jewelry never go out of fashion.
The original pieces of antique jewelry out there are generally older than a few decades and belong to the 1900s or earlier. All are very expensive because of their age and the classic aura that the historical value brings along. Between 1890 and 1910, for example, the Victorians welcomed two schools of jewelry designs into being, namely Edwardian and Art Nouveau. While the Art Nouveau was highly inspired by mythological characters and nature at large, Edwardians reflected aristocratic finesse in jewelry designing.
Jewelry artists like Georges Fouquet, Karl Faberge, Louis Comfort Tiffany and Rene Lalique, during the years, focused on jewelry that depicted exotic flowers, damsels, mythical animals and dragon flies set amidst vine-like creepers, winding sinuously around the central characters. They experimented with the materials and used things like tortoise shell, moonstones, horns, baroque pearls and demantoid garnets to design their Art Nouveau brand of jewelry. The eventual jewelry created by them was original and beautiful Art Nouveau jewelry.
The rich and the powerful among American industrialists and British aristocrats promoted Edwardian taste in jewelry to reflect their distinct elegance and lightness. They preferred Platinum crafted into meticulous lacy designs holding well-cut diamonds. The Edwardian jewelry also sported colored gemstones like, the natural pearl, pastel blue sapphire from Montana or black opals from Australia.
Today, the antique jewelry belonging to the era comprise of delicately crafted sword handles, pendants, lockets, concentric Rings, gold bracelets and brooches – all belonging to a mix of Art Nouveau and Edwardian traditions. Many of the precious instances of the timeline are still passing hands, though only between generations inside a family tree.
